Brief Overview
One of the most prevalent and beneficial forms of saturated fatty acids, octadecanoic acid (stearic acid) is found in combination in naturally occurring animal and vegetable fats. It is a waxy white solid with the chemical formula of CH3(CH2)16CO2H and molar mass of 284.48 g/mol. Stearate refers to stearic acid esters and salts. Commercial stearic acid is a blend of tiny amounts of oleic acid and roughly equal parts of palmitic and stearic acids. Stearic acid is found in nature as an ester of fatty alcohol and as a mixed triglyceride, or fat, with other long-chain acids. Compared to vegetable fat, animal fat contains a higher concentration of it.
Manufacturing Process
Fatty acids are used in the production of stearic acid. Depending on the type of raw material and the needed quality of stearic acid, there are various manufacturing procedures. The most frequent raw materials utilized in the manufacturing of stearic acid are tallow and grease. To produce stearic acids, there are two primary stages :
a. combination of fatty acids and glycerin are produced by hydrolyzing raw materials (fat or oil), which is followed by the separation of two products.
b. Fatty acid mixture purification and separation.
Paint Industry
A highly useful wax modifier for candlemaking is stearic acid. It's a non-toxic ingredient that makes candles harder and more opaque. In the warmer months, it also helps to maintain the shape of freestanding candles and brightens their whiteness. It raises the melting point and durability consistency of the candle. It is used to create a variety of art and craft items because of its stability and shaping ability.
Detergent Industry
In the production of soap and cosmetics such face wash, shampoo, beauty soaps, and shaving cream, stearic acid is a crucial ingredient. Stearic acid helps the soap hold its shape by thickening or hardening it. It is used in face cleansers, shampoos, and shaving creams because it is a strong cleaner and also functions as an emulsifying agent to bind oil and water, leaving the products smooth and creamy.
Fragrance and Flavoring Industry
Stearic acid finds widespread application in the food industry, serving as both a flavoring agent and binder to improve the taste and texture of a variety of food products. Its versatile usage encompasses the manufacturing of margarine, creamy spreads, chewing gums, bakery goods, dietary supplements, soft drinks, and artificial sweeteners. The integration of stearic acid in these compositions aims to enhance the sensory qualities of the products, making them more visually appealing to consumers.
