Brief Overview

.A naturally occurring mono-unsaturated omega-9 unsaturated fatty acid, oleic acid may be found in a variety of animal and plant fats and oils. The oil is colorless and odorless, however commercial samples could be tinted yellow. Oleic acid is categorized as a monounsaturated omega-9 fatty acid in terms of chemistry. "Oleic" refers to everything that is associated with or derived from olive oil, which is mostly made up of oleic acid.

 

Manufacturing Process 

In the typical production process of oleic acid, a blend of fats, including beef tallow, lard, and vegetable oil, is utilized. This mixture undergoes refining and hydrolysis to generate mixed fatty acids. Cold compression of these fatty acids results in the production of oleic and stearic acid. Following this, a series of dehydration and distillation processes are carried out to yield crude oleic acid, with stearic acid as a by-product. Notably, approximately 80% of the distillate obtained from this process comprises oleic acid.

Soap Industry

Oleic acid, an unsaturated fatty acid known for improving the moisturizing and conditioning aspects of soap, is highly sought after by soapmakers worldwide. Olive oil is a widely favored choice due to its oleic acid content. Contrary to popular belief, several oils, such as sunflower, safflower, and canola oils with higher oleic acid levels, along with more expensive luxury options like hazelnut, marula, moringa, and buriti oils, surpass olive oil in oleic acid concentration.

 

Cosmetic Applications

It functions as an emollient in cosmetics. The compound's capacity to bind water allows an oily layer to form, which aids in the skin's moisture retention. As long as the skin retains its moisture content, it remains healthy and moisturized.

 

Manufacturing Applications

It is used in the production of surfactants. Surfactants work well as a cleaning agent to get rid of stains from clothing. Oleic acid reduces the surface tension between two liquid phases, water and oil. Oleic acid is also utilized in the production of plasticizer. A production-use component called a plasticizer lowers the viscosity of a substance to soften it.

 

Other Applications

A little amount of oleic acid may be utilized as an excipient in pharmaceutical products. Oleic acid is also used in aerosol goods as an emulsifying or solubilizing agent. Emulsifiers function to prevent separation or coalescence by stabilizing the liquid mixture of the water and oil phases.
